Synopsis:
Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat 'hysterical' women (and some men), the play centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household.
Content Advisory: Contains sexual situations and nudity.
On Saturday, February 3, there will be a post-show talkback with the director, Rebecca Miller and Phyllis Thompson, a cultural historian who works on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American topics.
Dr. Thompson's book project, Domestic Pleasures: Dreams of Hope and Fulfillment in American Home Life, traces the intellectual history of the idea of pleasure in private life. Dr. Thompson is Assistant Professor of Gender & Sexuality Studies and Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning at Stonehill College, and Associate & Lecturer in Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University.
